PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission capable of making the gear ratios tighter by adding one element to a complex type planetary gear for shifting, allowing the engine to exert its optimum performance, and generating gear ratios having seven forward speeds or more with high efficiency, a small change in vehicle speed at the time of gear shifting, and a good feeling. SOLUTION: The automatic transmission is equipped with a reduction gear to reduce the rotating speed of an input shaft and a complex type planetary gear for shifting having the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth elements mating with five elements laid at a spacing corresponding to the gear ratios in the speed diagram. The first element is made possible to be coupled with a decelerating rotary member through the third clutch, or to be fixed by the first brake. The second element is made possible to be coupled with the input shaft through the second clutch, or to be fixed by the second brake. The third element is made possible to be fixed by the third brake. The fourth element is coupled at all times with the output shaft.
