PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bar coating method in which a coating film having a desired thickness is formed by applying a coating liquid on the surface of a flexible supporting body using a bar coating apparatus fabricated at a low cost. SOLUTION: In the bar coating method for forming the coating film on the surface of the flexible supporting body with a bar, a liquid pool 5 is formed from a rotatable bar 1 and supporting blocks 2a, 2b and 2c having a slit 4 formed to supply the coating liquid and attached detachably to a base table 26 movable in the vertical direction by supplying the coating liquid from the slit formed in the supporting block and the coating liquid is transferred on the surface of the flexible supporting body guided by an upstream side guide roller 7a positioned at a coating position on the upstream side of the bar in the transporting direction of the flexible supporting body 6 and a downstream side guide roller 7b positioned at a coating position on the downstream side of the bar. The bar and the base table supporting a pair of side plates are slowly ascended toward the coating position from a retracting position above the coating position while keeping the bar in a standstill state in the start-up of the coating.
