[Also in Division F4] A reflector has a reflecting surface and a periphery which lies in a plane at least a part of the reflecting surface having a curvature defined by the equation;- z<SP>2</SP> =4 {fY + a<SP>2</SP> - a #x<SP>2</SP>+(Y+f<SP>2</SP>)} in which a and f are constants X, Y, Z are mutually perpendicular co-ordinates and the Y co-ordinate is perpendicular to the plane of the periphery. The surface is generated by inclining a parabola so that its axis y<SP>1</SP>-y<SP>1</SP> intersects the axis Y-Y of a hyperbola at their common focus F spaced a distance f from the origin O and then rotating the parabola about its axis y<SP>1</SP>-y<SP>1</SP> to produce a paraboloid. Such a surface may then be used in an automobile head lamp, either alone, or in various combinations with surfaces which are paraboloid, hyperboloid, parabolic cylinder, hyperbolic cylinder or plane. |
