In apparatus for cleaning dust-laden air, the air to be cleaned enters tangentially an annular chamber defined between a casing 1 and a central tubular outlet 2 and passes downwardly into contact with a body of water in a sump 5, a thin jet of water is continuously sprayed onto the inner face of the casing from the end of a water supply pipe .11 and the lower end of the tubular central outlet is located above the water level in the apparatus a distance such that the speed of the air entering the outlet is reduced. The pipe 11 may be made rotatable and water is continuously withdrawn through an outlet pipe 6. The annular chamber may have a tangental outlet 17 with means for catching any large particles suspended in the entering air. The apparatus is particularly suitable for dealing with air exhausted from wood-working plant.
