PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the compactness, silentness, and rotating stability of a Stirling engine. SOLUTION: A space above the piston 23 of a high temperature side cylinder 21 is allowed to communicate with a space above the piston 24 of a low temperature side cylinder 22 through an operating gas passage 30 having a heater 27, a regenerative heat exchanger 28, and a cooler 29. The lower end parts of the pistons 23 and 24 are connected, through a crank mechanism, to a rotating shaft 32 projected from both sides of a generator 31 as a rotary energy converter with the rotational phase difference of Stirling cycle provided therebetween.
