摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that scattering of light, considered to be related to the strain of a smectic layer structure, occurs when an alternate electric field is applied to a liquid crystal consisting of a chiral smectic C-phase having homeotropic orientation, and to reduce the transient scattering of light, when compared with the conventional, by suppressing fluidity occurring in the liquid crystal layer, in which an electric field applying condition is set so that the layer plane of the smectic layer structure formed in the liquid crystal layer is always parallel to the surface of a substrate. <P>SOLUTION: In the optical deflection element 301, the liquid crystal layer 304 including the liquid crystal consisting of the chiral smectic C-phase having the packed homeotropic orientation is provided between the pair of transparent substrates 303, and an electrode 307 for applying to the liquid crystal layer 304 the electric field in the plate surface direction of the substrate 303 is formed. The liquid crystal is driven by applying an AC rectangular wave voltage of≥30 Hz to the liquid crystal layer 304, in which the electric field such that the layer plane of the smectic layer formed in the liquid crystal layer 304 is always parallel to the surface of the substrates 303 is generated. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p>
