PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an end face seal, using an O-ring, costing low and having high reliability. SOLUTION: A valve assembly includes a movable valve element having a first face surface. A valve seat has a second face surface for forming an end face seal with the first face surface, and one of the first face surface and the second face surface includes a cavity recessed in one face surface. The cavity has a peripheral bearing surface. The O-ring is inserted in the cavity, and has an outer edge part contacting the peripheral bearing surface. A retainer is fixed inside the O-ring in the cavity. The retainer has an inclined peripheral edge part, and the O-ring is pressed to the peripheral bearing surface to deform the O-ring, thereby substantially filling the cavity between the peripheral bearing surface and the inclined peripheral edge part.
