PURPOSE: A method for maintaining contact and meta data, a system, and a computer program product are provided to enable a portable phone to periodically update an automatic live contact from an automatic contact and meta data information update function initialized by a data service provider, so that the portable phone initiates communication with one of contacts based on synchronized contact and meta data information. CONSTITUTION: A portable phone(260) generates a contact list(220A) where contact information on various types of communication is stored. If at least one contact can be usable as new information, the contact is designated as an automatic live contact to be updated while the rest contacts are not updated. If new information can be usable for at least the one automatic live contact, the contact list(220A) is sent to a data service provider(210) such that the data service provider(210) can send the new information to the portable phone(260). An automatic contact and meta data information update function initiated by the data service provider(210) is periodically transmitted through a portable phone carrier(240). At least the one live contact is updated with the received update function.
