<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic designing system for optimal overhead distribution lines and a method for the system wherein the working efficiency is enhanced, the designing time is shortened, and the equipment cost is reduced. <P>SOLUTION: The automatic designing system 80 for optimal overhead distribution lines comprises a pole information file 81 and a computer 82. The pole information file 81 holds initial setting items including at least poles at which distribution lines are branched, the positions of poles, the routes of distribution lines, and the load and restrictions on each pole. The computer 82 finds initial solutions for overhead distribution line designing based on the initial setting items, and finds the optimal solution for overhead distribution line designing that minimizes the construction cost and the power loss based on the initial solutions for overhead distribution line designing. When finding the initial solutions for overhead distribution line designing, the computer 82 uses logic techniques.
