PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of velocity fluctuation of a transfer belt due to the eccentricity of support rollers before and behind a detection roller, in an image forming apparatus which transfers toner images formed on a plurality of image carriers to a recording medium conveyed and carried by the transfer belt, which detects an angular velocity of one detection roller of the support rollers around which the transfer belt is wound, and which controls the velocity of the transfer belt to be constant on the basis of the detection result. SOLUTION: The peripheral length of the support rollers 5 or 9 before or behind the detection roller 10 is set so as to be one integer-th of the transfer interval LA between transfer positions TP for transferring the toner images from respective image carriers 3Y, 3M, 3C, and 3BK to the recording medium.
