PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a high pressure discharge lamp which has a high pressure withstand strength. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method for the high pressure discharge lamp has an arc tube and a sealing part, which comprises the steps of preparing a glass pipe 80 for the discharge lamp having an arc tube part 1' and a side tube 2' constituting the arc tube of the high pressure discharge lamp, inserting in the side tube 2' a glass member 70 composed of a second glass with a softening point lower than that of a first glass constituting the side tube 2', adhering the glass member 70 to the side tube 2' by heating the side tube 2', and then heating a part including at least the glass member 70 and the side tube 2' at a temperature higher than the strain-temperature of the second glass and lower than that of the first glass.
