A solid tension block (1) is pressed tightly against each open end of the drum and a tensioning device (3) mounted in the block is connected to a coupling part (2) that extends through a passage (12) in the block and through the drum so that it can be anchored in the block at the other end of the drum. The extension piece (4) is connected to the block via an articulated joint. Tension in the coupling part is measured and as the drum ages, the tension can be altered.
