<p>Locking assembly for locking a plastic disposable syringe tip (14) in a dental handpiece body (12) comprising an adapter (20) mounted in the handpiece body (12), the adapter (20) including a hollow body portion having external threads (24) and a tapered male member (21) mounted on the interior of the hollow body portion, and means for pulling the syringe tip (14) onto the tapered male member (21) and for gripping the syringe tip (14) in a tightly held position on the tapered male member (21) to prevent axial rotation of the syringe tip (14).The means comprising a gripping member (40) comprising a generally hollow tubular body separated into a plurality of fingers (41), each finger (41) separated from an adjacent finger (41) by a longitudinal slot (45) and a locking cap (30) comprising a generally hollow body having internal threads (39), the gripping member (40) being mounted inside the locking cap (30), whereby when the locking cap (30) is screwed onto the adapter (20), the gripping member (40) compresses around the syringe tip (14) to securely hold the syringe tip (14) inside the adapter (20) and to pull the syringe tip (14) onto the tapered male member (21). The locking cap (30) has an internal bore (38) on the interior of the hollow body and each finger (41) has an end flange (47) that seats in the internal bore (38) to captivate the gripping member (40) inside the locking cap (30).</p> |
