A printer in which an ink ribbon can be replaced easily through removable engagement of a ribbon guide with a print head or a carriage mounting the print head. It is possible to prevent change of an interval between the upper surface of a medium and the print head due to increase in the abrasion of the surface of the ribbon guide in abutment with the medium, thereby preventing lowering of print quality, and eliminating trouble in the winding of the ink ribbon. The printer comprises a carriage (23) moving in the direction perpendicular to the carrying direction of the medium, a print head (15) mounted on the carriage (23) for printing on the medium, and a ribbon guide (16) for guiding the ink ribbon toward the end face of the print head (15). The ribbon guide (16) has a medium guide face in abutment with the medium and is detachably engaged with the carriage (23) or the print head (15).
