PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the quality of the image and realize a high speed reading by using an image scanner using 4-line CCD which efficiently reads a manuscript in line with contents of the manuscript in which color pages and monochrome pages exist together. SOLUTION: A control circuit for switch-controlling carriages 2 and 3 whose speed can be switched to either a monochrome speed or a color speed according to the contents of the manuscript is provided and 4-line CCD 12 reads the first page of the manuscript at the monochrome speed. When the first page is a color one, it is switched to the color speed and a rescanning is performed. Subsequently, a scanning speed for a second page or later is set according to the contents of the manuscript and the rescanning is performed when it is required. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
