The invention discloses a method of expanding the number of virtual local area network supported by switch device, after the switch device has received the data frame sent by source switch device, the method acquires the VLAN ID in the data frame, and determines if it supports the VLAN ID, if yes, switch device transmits the data frame in the VLAN corresponding to the VLAN ID; if no, switch devices passes transparently the data frame. In the case that switch device supports the number of VLAN IDs which meet the basal request, the invention can pass transparently the data frame which is not supported by the switch device, resolves the problem in some case there is not enough VLAN supported by switch device itself, and does not induce storage capacity of the CMOS chip in the switch device, reduces the consume of CMOS chip resource.
