A compacting press for a cylindrical container of hazardous material, especially nuclear waste consists of a support for the container with an anvil (34) mounted on a base (32), and a moving compacter (40) with a die (46). It has a guide assembly (50) for the compacter with a skirt (52) made up of a jacket (52a), a hoop (52b) and a cradle (52c) fixed to the hoop. The cradle is connected detachably to a skirt support that is capable of vertical movement, the connector being separable by a horizontal movement of a mushroom-shaped projection (54b) in a slot (52e).
