A method of connecting together at least two work-pieces 30, 32 using a blind rivet 10 comprises rotating the rivet whilst simultaneously applying pressure 40 to the rivet against the work-piece. The rotation of the rivet results in the generation of heat which softens, or reduces the strength, of the workpiece material locally to the area of contact such that the biassing pressure pushes the rivet though generating its own hole. Once inserted, rotation is stopped and a mandrel 20 can be used to compress the work-pieces between a deformed portion and a flange 14. Preferably, the end 42 of the rivet has an abrasive surface to produce more friction. The blind side of the rivet may be tapered, frusto-conical or parabolically curved. Rotating and setting of the rivet can ideally be carried out with a single tool. |
