PURPOSE: Provided is a method for collecting the helium and chlorine-containing gas generated during the preparation of an optical fiber and recirculating it to reduce the manufacturing cost of an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of drying a ventilation gas stream containing helium and chlorine generated during the preparation of an optical fiber; and consolidating the dried one, wherein helium and chlorine are collected from the ventilation gas stream. Preferably hydrochloric acid is removed from the ventilation gas stream, and/or the ventilation gas stream is separated into a helium-rich gas stream and a chlorine-rich gas stream. Preferably the separation is carried out by using a separation device selected from the group consisting of a selective permeable membrane, a temperature swing adsorption device and a pressure swing adsorption device.
