PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance detection accuracy on the projection distance between a projection lens and a projection surface. SOLUTION: A distance detector 6 is provided for detecting a projection distance from a test pattern imaged by an imaging part 22, the distance detector 6 comprising a test pattern projection part 21 for projecting the test pattern used to detect the projection distance between the projection lens 11 and the projection surface, and an imaging part 22 for imaging the test pattern projected onto the projection surface. The imaging part 22 comprises an imaging element 28 for imaging the test pattern and an optical system 26 for guiding the test pattern to the imaging element 28. The center position of the optical system 26 is put close to an optical axis of the projection part 21 in a direction parallel to a light receiving surface rather than to the center position of the light receiving surface of the imaging element 28.
