PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reproducing apparatus capable of attaining special effect processing even when the duration of a scene of a reproduced moving picture signal is less than the time required for the special effect processing such as fading. SOLUTION: The reproducing apparatus includes: a reproduction means for reproducing a moving picture signal recorded on a recording medium; a reproduction time detection means for detecting a reproduction time of the moving picture signal; a special effect means for applying special effect processing to the moving picture signal reproduced from the recording medium; and a control means for decreasing the time required for the special effect processing by the special effect processing means when the reproduction time detected by the reproduction time detection means is shorter than predetermined.
