The method involves transmitting pulses, e.g. light pulses, in a defined spatial angle in a defined time manner and receiving pulses reflected or scattered by the person (6) or object at a receiver (8) in a defined spatial position relative to the source (4). A computer (14) derives the pulse transition times from the source to the receiver via the object or person and the position image is derived using the known spatial relationship of the source and receiver, the spatial angle and the transition times.
