A moulding compound comprises a continuous phase of uncured elastomer and glass fibres distributed throughout said phase, a major proportion of the fibres being present as substantially integrated strands and a minor proportion as partially or wholly disintegrated strands. In the preferred method glass strands are added to an elastomer, e.g. natural or synthetic rubber, and the mixture is rolled prior to addition of an additional amount of strands and further rolling. The filaments used to form the strands may be treated with a size and the strands themselves may be impregnated with an elastomeric material containing vulcanizing agents and fillers. The impregnated strands, after coating with a lubricant, if desired, are incorporated into the elastomeric phase, which is then moulded to yield, e.g. laminated belts (see Division B5) or tyres (see Division B7). |
