PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 1,6-hexanediol under economical and safer conditions without requiring separation of a catalyst by using a carboxylic acid-containing mixture recovered by removing cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone and unreacted cyclohexane from a liquid phase oxidation reaction liquid of cyclohexane. SOLUTION: The method for producing 1,6-hexanediol comprises esterifying the carboxylic acid-containing mixture with at least one alcohol of a compound group consisting of a 1-6C compound having at least one hydroxy group to provide an ester compound-containing mixture and carrying out catalytic decomposition of the ester compound-containing mixture with hydrogen under trickle reaction conditions in the presence of a lower monoalcohol by using a solid catalyst containing copper as a fixed bed catalyst.
