[Also in Division A5] Novel compounds of the formula wherein R is hydrogen, hydroxy or OAcy<SP>1</SP> in which Acyl is the acyl radical of a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid of 1-16 carbon atoms inclusive; R 1 is hydrogen or methyl; R 2 is hydrogen or methyl; X is > CH2, C = O, or Y is hydrogen or fluorine; and wherein when X is > CH 2 , Y is limited to hydrogen, the corresponding #<SP>1,2</SP>compounds, the corresponding 20#-hydroxy compounds, and compounds of the formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , X 1 and Y are as defined above and P and Q each represent hydrogen or an alkyl radical of 1-8 carbon atoms inclusive, an aralkyl radical of 7-13 carbon atoms inclusive or an aryl radical of 6-12 carbon atoms inclusive or P and Q taken together with the attached carbon atom represent a cycloalkyl radical of 3-8 carbon atoms inclusive, are obtained by reacting a 6α<SP>1</SP>-(2<SP>1</SP>-hydroxyethyl) - pregn - 4 - en - 3 - one, e.g. a compound of the formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , X, Y, P and Q are as defined above, with a strong base to produce the corresponding spiro - [pregn - 4 - ene - 6,1<SP>1</SP>- cyclopropane]-3-one, if desired hydrolysing a 17α,21-acetonide product to obtain the corresponding 17α,20-dihydroxy compound and if desired oxidizing the latter, e.g. with chromic acid to obtain 17α-hydroxyspiro-[pregn-4-ene- 6,1<SP>1</SP> - cyclopropane] - 3,20 - dione. In the products obtained, an 11#-hydroxy group may be oxidized to an 11-keto group and a double bond may be introduced into 1,2-position by dehydrogenation, e.g. with SeO 2 or microbiologically. Acylation may be effected in 17-position.
