A virtual visual point image generating method for generating a virtual visual point image as an image when a subject is viewed from a virtual visual point based on a plurality of sheets of subject image shot by a plurality of cameras. The method comprises the steps of setting a projection plane having a multi-layer structure to determine points on respective subject images corresponding to respective projection points on the projection plane, determining the color information of the projection points based on color information at the plurality of corresponding points, calculating, based on the degree of the correlation between the corresponding points, the degree of possibility of the subject existing at distances corresponding to the positions of the plurality of projection points overlapped as viewed from a reference visual point in a space for the respective projection points, and performing a mixing processing matching the degree of possibility of the subject existing on the color information of reference points overlapped as viewed from the virtual visual point to determine the color information of respective pixels in the virtual visual point image.
