A projector includes two range sensors (21, 22) of a phase defference method. The range sensors (21, 22) are laid out near a projection lens (14) in such a way that a line connecting the centers of two photo-sensor arrays incorporated in one of the range sensors (21) crosses a line connecting the centers of two photo-sensors arrays incorporated in the other range sensors (22) approximately at the right angles.
