PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin-film magnetic head the magneto-resistance change rate of which is improved, a head gimbal assembly, a hard disk drive, and a magneto-resistance effect element. SOLUTION: This thin-film magnetic head 10 includes an anti-ferromagnetic layer 32, a pinned layer 42, a free layer 46 and a non-magnetic layer 45 arranged between the pinned layer and the free layer. This head is a CPP type head in which a sense current is made to flow in the thickness direction of the free layer 46. The pinned layer 42 includes a stacked part 40 provided with: a 1st layer 36 formed of Cu; a 2nd layer 38 which is formed of Cu and arranged to the side of free layer from the 1st layer; and an intermediate layer 37 which is arranged between the 1st layer and 2nd layer in contact with these layers and formed by partially oxidizing a ferromagnetic layer.
