PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a prescribed gap between a distal end of an upper nozzle and a workpiece without being damaged by contact with the workpiece in a machine. SOLUTION: In this method, the gap between the upper nozzle of a wire electric discharge machine and the workpiece is adjusted. By holding a member of prescribed thickness between the distal end of the upper nozzle and the workpiece and bringing the member into contact with the distal end of the upper nozzle, direct contact of the distal end of the upper nozzle and the workpiece is prevented. By performing a position control of a Z-axis direction of the upper nozzle based on the thickness of the member and a desired nozzle gap, the prescribed gap is set between the distal end of the upper nozzle and the workpiece. In the position control of the Z-axis direction of the upper nozzle, deflection amount by deflection of a guide, the member, the workpiece and the nozzle, and displacement, etc. of an upper guide by hydraulic pressure are corrected.
