PURPOSE: To provide a water softener which minimizes installation height of a water softener body and delays contact time of raw water with ion exchange resin to the utmost by improving structure of cartridge, and obtains a large quantity of softened water per a unit time by reducing pressure loss of raw water while maintaining the same contact time as in a conventional water softener. CONSTITUTION: In a water softener in which an inlet pipe(12) is connected to the underneath of a body(11) containing a cartridge(15), and to the side surface of which an outlet pipe(13) is connected, the water softener is characterized in that a vertical through hole(16) to which the inlet pipe is connected is formed in a central part of a cylindrical cartridge, a connection passageway(17) is formed on the upper surface of the cartridge such that raw water passing through the vertical through hole moves to the outer circumferential surface of the cartridge through the connection passageway, and a pipe(19) filled with ion exchange resin(18) is spirally formed on the outer circumferential surface of the cartridge.
