<p>The invention relates to an apparatus for machining the surface of a thin-walled hollow cylinder (8) by means of a laser beam (4), striking the hollow cylinder (8) at least approximately radially and movable in its longitudinal direction, in particular for producing a rotary screen. In this arrangement, the hollow cylinder (8) is rotatably mounted at its axial ends by means of two bearing devices (9, 10), a supporting bearing (21) which surrounds the hollow cylinder (8) being present between the bearing devices (9, 10). This supporting bearing (21) is located at a predetermined axial position of the hollow cylinder (8) and is fixed in place there. Furthermore, it is designed in such a way that it leaves at least one path clear along which the laser beam (8) moves, so that a pattern produced on the hollow cylinder (8) is not interrupted by the supporting bearing (21).
