PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a binding device and a method for receiving newspaper from an insertion device and a conveyor directly to form a bundle of folded newspaper. SOLUTION: This binding device is used to form a series of bundles of substantially flat materials. This binding device is composed of a gripper conveyor having a plurality of grippers capable of holding so as to open one of the materials, respectively, when the series of bundles are composed of a first bundle and at least one following bundle, mounted on it, and moving in the direction of downstream side, a belt conveyor which can receive the material released by the gripper, is adjacent to the gripper conveyor, moves in the direction of downstream side, receives the material, and moves it in the direction of the device to form the first bundle, and a gripper conveyor capable of releasing the material at a first point while forming the first bundle and releasing the material at a second point on the downstream side while moving from a pulling-in position to the operation position.
