PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for controlling an engine capable of easily realizing idling stop operation. SOLUTION: A mode selector switch 37 selects a low idle mode to drop the rotational speed of an engine 31 in a low idle state or an idling stop mode for bringing into an idling stop mode. The operation of a single operation low idle switch 27 gives a low idle state instruction in the low idle mode and an idling stop state instruction in the idling stop mode. A controller 32 controls the engine 31 in the low idle state by operating the single operation low idle switch 27 in the low idle mode, controls the engine 31 in the idling stop state by operating the low idle switch 27 in the idling stop mode, and re-starts the engine by re-operating the single operation low idle switch 27.
