METHOD OF MOLDING OPTICAL UNIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing an optical unit by which thermal efficiency is improved and molding defects are eliminated in the molding of a glass base material by pressing the base material in a molding die.

SOLUTION: An atmospheric gas is changed from conventionally used gaseous nitrogen to a gas such as helium having higher thermal conductivity than that of gaseous nitrogen, and the heating and molding are carried out under that atmosphere. The process is shortened, the transmittance of the quartz glass is improved and defects due to air occlusion is eliminated by the improvement of the heat conduction efficiency.
