PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that it takes time to adjust focus since none of external factors such as the brightness of a subject is taken into consideration when a correction quantity for stopping a lens in front of its focusing position is decided in a conventional technique. SOLUTION: Once the distance to a subject is measured by using a passive sensor 42, the movement quantity L of a focusing lens 12 is calculated by a CPU 44 from the measured distance. The focusing lens 12 is driven by a driver 18 by a movement quantity L-Lc and stops in front of its focusing position. Contrast detection type focus adjustment is carried out after the focusing lens 12 is thus moved. Here, the movement correction quantity Lc is made increasingly larger as a subject becomes darker.
