PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for recording data which realize better searching by reducing the data amount of an image file. SOLUTION: In the apparatus for recording data, when information obtained from each of a direction detection sensor 104, a position detection sensor 107 and a time detection sensor 110 is recorded in a recording medium 122, the relative values of various bits of information regarding the direction, the position and the time obtained during photographing are recorded all together in the specified position of video data or a file only when necessary. Thus, the apparatus solves conventional problems, i.e., (1) a method for recording video data by using a UMID as one of AV material management standards needs to add UMID to all the frames of the video data and thus the amount of data is increased, and (2) when searching is performed based on metadata in the UMID, the searching takes much time because reference is made to the UMID added to each frame.
