The system has a packet builder (22) between a workstation (20) and an IP switched network (25). The builder converts an IPv4 data packet (21) received from the workstation (20) and transmitted to the network, to an IPv6 data packet (23) and reciprocally. A packet builder (28) converts an IPv6 data packet (29) received from the network and transmitted to a workstation (26), to an IPv4 data packet (27) and reciprocally. An independent claim is also included for a method for converting IPv4 data packets into IPv6 data packets.
