PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a total station for instantly directing the collimation axis of a telescope or a laser-beam irradiation axis to a designated position. SOLUTION: When inputting an approximate distance from an apparatus point 222 to an arbitrary position on a line L into an on-line position designation area 220 of a measurement controller 200, an image 232 of a tunnel planned excavation cross-section at the inputted line distance position is displayed in an excavated cross-section position designated area 230. When designating a collimation point or a laser irradiation point 233a (x'<SB>1</SB>, y'<SB>1</SB>) in the designated area 230, a vertical angle and a horizontal angle are calculated as the deviation of a designated point (x<SB>1</SB>, y<SB>1</SB>) in the excavation cross-section from the collimation axis O of the telescope 46 or the laser-beam irradiation axis O1. When they are transmitted to the total station, a horizontal shaft 43B and a vertical shaft 43A are rotatively driven by the control of a verticality control part 56 and a horizontality control part 54, turning the collimation axis O of the telescope 46 or the irradiation axis O1 roughly in an aimed direction with respect to a tunnel excavation cross-section (heading surface A).
