PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound having excellent electron-transporting ability and hole-blocking ability, and suitably usable as a material for a hole-blocking layer of an organic electroluminescent element. SOLUTION: The diarylamine-based compound is represented by general formula (1) (wherein, Ar<SP>1</SP>to Ar<SP>4</SP>are each an aromatic hydrocarbon group substituted with a monovalent electron-attracting group having a Hammett substituent constantσ<SB>p</SB>within a range of 0.00<σ<SB>p</SB><0.90, a monovalent aromatic heterocyclic group, or a monovalent group substituted with either of the above groups; Z is a divalent linking group satisfying either of containing -CO-, -SO<SB>2</SB>- or a divalent aromatic heterocyclic group, or having an electron-attracting group having a Hammett substituent constantσ<SB>p</SB>within a range of 0.00<σ<SB>p</SB><0.90, or a monovalent aromatic heterocyclic group).
