An apparatus for receiving an MPEG-4 IPMP extended ISMA media stream receives an ISMA media stream including an ISMA head, contents and an IPMP tool list descriptor indicative of a method for processing the contents, acquires the IPMP tool list descriptor from the ISMA media stream, tests whether any tool indicated by the IPMP tool list descriptor is present in the receiving apparatus, uses such tool, if present, to process the contents, and otherwise ends without failure.
