PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image holding body regenerating apparatus for removing an image forming substance from an image holding body and regenerating the image holding body, the apparatus realizing that by detecting the repeated times of removing the image forming substance from the image holding body, an image holding body which can be reused can be efficiently separated from an image holding body which can not be reused, and the use limit of an image holding body can be estimated. SOLUTION: The regenerating apparatus for an image holding body has a means to apply a destabilizing agent which decreases deposition power of an image forming substance on an image holding body with an image forming substance deposited thereon, then to remove the image forming substance and to generate the image holding body. The regenerating apparatus is constituted in such a manner that: the destabilizing agent used for the above means is colored by using a dye; the density of the dye depositing on a part of the image holding body where the image forming substance does not deposit is measured and compared to specified reference density so as to detect the repeated times of removing the image forming substance; and an image holding body which can be reused is separated from an image holding body which can not be reused. Further, a function to display the repeated times of removing the image forming substance is added to the regenerating apparatus so that the use limit of the image holding body is estimated to improve the efficiency of separation.
