<p>A process for producing a 3-nitro-4-alkoxybenzoic acid which comprises the step of reacting at a temperature of 30 to 100°C a mixture comprising a 4-alkoxybenzoic acid and nitric acid having a concentration of 40 to 80%, the nitric acid being contained in an amount at least 8 times by weight the amount of the 4-alkxoybenzoic acid.</p>
