PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting method of a high-pressure discharge lamp especially for an image apparatus capable of re-lighting it immediately after switching-off in a short time. SOLUTION: This lighting method is characterized by that, in a transition state wherein a lighting state is changed over to a lighting-out state, lamp power to be supplied to electrodes 3 and 4 is reduced to a level without stopping arc discharge 5 until the lamp temperature is set to a value allowing the lamp to be lit again, and current feed to the electrodes 3 and 4 is cut off when the lamp temperature is set to the value allowing the lamp to be lit again.
