<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently using PVC and SPVC resources. <P>SOLUTION: In a multi-service network, a layer 2 traffic, such as an IP traffic according to the invention is carried over an ATM SVC or SPVCs. Methods of setting up, such connections using the PNNI protocol, are also discussed. By using enhancements to the standard ATM SPVC/SVC signaling messages, a layer 3 IP path-specifying processes on multi-service switches at the opposite ends of the network allow a traffic to flow in transparent manner via an underlying layer 2 virtual connection.
