The invention relates to non-living lyophilised cells from prokaryotic or eukaryotic organisms and the use thereof as standards or controls for the assay of intra-cellular nucleic acid sequences (RNA or DNA), the epigenetic modifications and the products (proteins etc.) thereof. The invention further relates to a method applied to the production of said cells.
