<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gate setting method and device, in which a gate in an automatic register controlling device becomes easy to be entered by presetting. <P>SOLUTION: In the gate setting method and device for the automatic register controlling device for registering by detecting an object register mark printed with a registering printing unit and a reference register mark printed with a printing unit locating upstream of the registering printing unit as a reference, the width of an object detecting gate for detecting the object register mark is set narrower than the width of a reference detecting gate for detecting the reference register mark.
