Disclosed is an assembly (10) for assisting in the attachment of an applicant such as a winch (12) to a surface (e.g. deck) of a watercraft such as a sailing boat. Fixing screws (14) are retained in apertures (42) in the winch (12) by retaining means such as lock washers (38). The assembly (10) of the winch (12) and screws (14) may therefore be produced at a location remote from the watercraft, the retaining meanings (38) holding the screws (14) against rotation during transportation and during fixing of the appliance to the surface of the watercraft. <IMAGE>
