PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly and properly restart an engine in an automatic stop state. SOLUTION: An engine starting system comprises: a restart control means constituted of an ECU 30 for controlling the engine to restart without operating an starter 31, if a piston stop position of a cylinder in an expansion stroke and in engine stop is within an area where the engine can be restarted by combustion of the cylinder, and controlling the starter 31 to operate at a time point of starting the restart, if the stop position of the piston is closer to an top dead center side or to a bottom dead center side compared with the area where the engine can be restarted by the combustion of the cylinder, and an air density estimation means for estimating air density in a cylinder at the time point of starting the restart of the engine. When an estimation value of the air density is lower than a preset reference value, an area of operating the starter 31 from the time point of the restart is widened, compared with in normal time.
