PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide aβ-alanine derivative and its salt in high yield by using a practical means. SOLUTION: A succinic acid ester derivative represented by general formula (I) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each the same or different and are each independently an alkyl group which may have a substituent, a heterocyclic group, an aryl group which may have a substituent or an aralkyl group which may have a substituent; R<SP>2</SP>is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group which may have a substituent, a heterocyclic group, an aryl group which may have a substituent or an aralkyl group which may have a substituent or, together with R<SP>1</SP>, forms a ring; and * denotes an asymmetric carbon atom) is subjected to a series of chemical reactions of halogenation, amidation and decarbonylation.
