<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element which can selectively reflect circularly polarized light over the entire region of visible light and has decreased optical defects. <P>SOLUTION: The optical element 10 has cholesteric liquid crystal layers 11, 12 and 13 laminated on a glass substrate 14 with an alignment layer 15. The cholesteric liquid crystal layers 11, 12 and 13 selectively reflect the circularly polarized light over the entire region (400 to 750 nm) of the visible light as a whole. The short wavelength side cholesteric liquid crystal layers 11 and 12 selectively reflect the circularly polarized light of the short wavelength side wavelength region (blue wavelength region and red wavelength region) within the visible light region and the spiral pitch lengths of the liquid crystal molecules change continuously with respect to the thickness direction. The long wavelength side cholesteric layer 13 selectively reflects the circularly polarized light of the long wavelength side wavelength region (red wavelength region) within the visible light region and the spiral pitch of the liquid crystal molecules is constant with respect to the thickness direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
